Want a simple way to promote heart health? Reduce your intake of trans fats, which most commonly come from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. These inflammatory fats (found in most margarines, snack foods, processed foods and some cooking oils) may promote heart disease by being inflammatory. Instead, use extra virgin olive oil as the primary fat in your diet and choose whole foods like veggies, fruit and nuts as snacks.
Don’t just rely on a package claiming, “No Trans Fat.” Instead, comb through the ingredients list and avoid anything containing partially hydrogenated oils. Foods with lists that are longer than five or six items and include ingredients you do not recognize should also be minimized or avoided.
