If you thought stroke just attacked old people think again. Even stroke in young people could happen. It is commonly known that the risk of stroke increases with age. In the case of Katie May who died from stroke in February this year at the age of 34. She simply collapsed during a photo shoot and died soon after in hospital. Although she thought she had a pinched nerve, but unfortunately, she died from stroke. Here’s what you need to know to find out the early warning signs of stroke despite of being young.
1. Impaired, blurred or loss of vision
The onset of stroke can cause impaired or blurred vision in one or both eyes. According to statistics, 44{64269450f5507e47f72d388803cf42f72ae561c6cbc2a263afd3460a855b3d20} of people who suffered from stroke in the UK experienced loss of vision before the stroke occurred.
2. Sudden bouts of dizziness and headache
According to David Newman, MD and also an Associate Professor in the Neurology Department of Hopkins University, dizziness is a strong warning sign of a possible stroke, especially in women younger than 45. So, if you feel sudden dizziness or head swings and blackouts, seek immediate medical help.
3. Incoherent language
When you start to talk slurred and incoherent speech, it is the earliest warning sign of a stroke. It is also accompanied by sudden confusion and trouble speaking and understanding.
4. Sudden numbness in limbs
A sudden feeling of numbness in an arm or leg could be a sign of stroke. For instance, Katie May felt as if she had pinched her nerve. This can cause paralysis and collapse. The paralysis is linked to the side of the brain which suffers the stroke.
A good test of stroke: is to extend your arms outwards with the palms facing up for 10 seconds. If one arm falls, it indicates a muscle weakness.
